How Background Checks Work

A professional background check is a structured investigation into a person’s identity, history, and circumstances, drawing on a combination of data sources, public records, and intelligence techniques. It is not the same as a quick internet search, though it includes elements of that. This article explains what actually happens during a professional background check and what kind of information it can produce.

The Starting Point: What You Want to Know

Every background check begins with a clear understanding of what you are trying to establish. Are you concerned about someone’s identity — are they who they say they are? Are you concerned about their history — do they have a background that should concern you? Are you concerned about their current circumstances — are they telling you the truth about their life right now? Different questions point to different investigative approaches, and a well-scoped check is more effective and more cost-efficient than an open-ended one.

Identity Verification

The foundation of most background checks is confirming that a person’s claimed identity is genuine: that their name, date of birth, and other basic identifying details are consistent and accurate. This is established through cross-referencing across multiple data sources — credit reference data, electoral roll records, and other public records — to confirm that the person exists as described and that the details they have given you are consistent with the wider record.

Public Record Research

Public records provide a wealth of lawfully accessible information: Companies House for any business interests or directorships; the Land Registry for property ownership; county court judgment registers for civil litigation history; and the insolvency register for bankruptcy or individual voluntary arrangement history. Each of these sources can confirm or contradict what a person has told you about their circumstances.

Open Source Intelligence

A structured review of publicly available online information — social media, professional networking profiles, news archives, and other accessible material — can reveal a great deal about a person’s claimed circumstances, history, and current activities. This is conducted methodically and goes well beyond what a casual search would reveal, often surfacing information the person may not realise is publicly accessible.

Specialist Database Searches

Licensed investigators have access to specialist tracing and verification databases that aggregate data not available to the general public, providing a more complete and more reliable picture of a person’s address history, financial associations, and other identifying information than free online searches can produce.

Physical Investigation

Where the situation warrants it, and where a question cannot be resolved through data and records alone, physical investigation — confirming a person’s presence at a stated address, or in more involved cases, surveillance — can establish facts that no database search can reach.

The Report

At the conclusion of a background check, we produce a clear report setting out what was checked, what was found, and what it means for the specific question you asked. We are honest about the limits of what has been established and we do not overstate our findings.
